Lindstedt / Tecau win second Bastad title
The Bastad native, Robert Lindstedt and his doubles partner Horia Tecau won the title in SkiStar Swedish Open for the second consecutive year by beating Simon Aspelin and Andreas Siljeström with a 6-3, 6-3 win. It was with mixed feelings Lindstedt won the trophe since it was Aspelin’s last match as a professional tennis player.
- I can’t win, I said jokingly to Jonas (Bjorkman) but professional sport is not a charity, he says at a press conference after the win.
In the middle of the match the light drizzle became more persistent pouring and the game was interrupted. Because of the long break the doubles final had to move to Court 1.
- Rain interrupting the match is always harder than when a match does not start and of course you want to play at Center Court, but this time it was good with a break because when we came back we played a lot better, Lindstedt says after the game.
- Last Tuesday, I really didn’t think I would sit here today, he continues.
Simon Aspelin also has mixed feelings after the last match of his career.
- It feels a little weird now. I think tomorrow when I go home to Stockholm and next week I will probably feel it more. Right now I am mostly disappointed to have lost. But I'm at least happy to have been able to finish my career with a final in Bastad, he says.
Andreas Siljeström has reached the first ATP final of his career with the doubles final in Bastad.
- At the start of the tournament, I felt more pressure than at the end. I did not want Simon to end his career with a loss in the first round, says the tall Swede.
- It's been a great honor to play with Simon in his last tournament, especially as we have never played any matches together. I feel very honored, he concludes.
