Ferrer sets semi-final clash with Verdasco

Their 21:st encounter on tour

Ten years difference between Ferrer and Laaksonen but only one point seperated the players in todays quarter-final.

Laaksonen, who just broke into the top 100 this week, was facing a Båstad veteran Ferrer who has won the tournament twice and plays his tenth SkiStar Swedish Open this year. Ferrer was the true favourite this time in their first encounter. But Laaksonen did not make it easy for Ferrer. Ferrer proved his skills when he managed to break Laaksonen in the end of the first set putting 75 on the score board.

Many might have though the second would be easier for the Spaniard but 3 double faults and some bad decision making made Laaksonen the winner of the second 63.

The third was a set of give and take where both players where brilliant as well as donated points to their adversary. A tie-breaker had to decide the outcome of this 2h 42 minute match and Ferrer made some fast winners and secured his semi-final spot 75 35 76(3) with fellow countryman Fernando Verdasco...it will be their 21:st encounter.

Verdasco reaches his fourth semi-final in Båstad

"My best match this year"

Todays quarter-final between Fernando Verdasco and Albert ramos-Vinolas was a copy of last years final where Ramos-Vinolas came out as the winner. This year Verdasco came out on top after playing the best match of the year according to himself.

The 24 ranked Ramos-Vinolas has shown great form on clay this year but dodn't manage to reach the level he played in last years final. Verdasco on the other hand played a brilliant tennis and the score 62 63 shows Verdasco is in true form.

Dolgopolov wins 2h battle to reach semi-final

The match between Alexandr Dolgopolov and Karen Khachanov was played on court 1 with a packed stand around the court.

Both players required some time to adjust to a little wet conditions and a heavier court than usual. First set was all even and hade to be decided in a tie-break where Dolgopolov managed to squeeze through an extra winner and closed the set 76(5). Khachanov managed to bounce back and even though the numbers where fair it was a lot tougher than the score 63 in the Russians favour.

The deciding set was just like the first one and as the clock got closer two the 2 hour mark the tie-breaker was a fact. This time Dolgopolov proved more direct and finished it in 2h and 22 seconds.....7-2 in the breaker. After the 76(5 36 76(2) win he now faces another Russian in the semi-final as Kuznetsov dismissed Schwartzman.

Ymer duo through to semi-final

Another good win secures the Ymer brothers a spot in the semi-finals.

Again, a bigger crowd than usual for a doubles match, was gathered at Court 1. The Ymer brothers had something to do with that, naturally.

Second seed Zimonjic/Marrero, have 67 ATP titles between them, came to a good start leading 4-2 in the first before the Ymers managed to break and claim it 75. A frustrated Marrero missed some easy shots every now and than and Ymers used that to their advantage.

Also the second set came to be a tight affair and it had to be decided in a tie-breaker where Ymers came to a small lead in the start and than cruised to a clean victory 75 76(3)

The fourth day of the SkiStar Swedish Open offered a few surprises.

Seventh seed Diego Schwartzman won the all Argentinian affair against fellow countryman Renzo Olivo. Top seed Pablo Carreno Busta had to retire in the third set against Kuznetsov due to an abdominal issue. Cuevas had shown great form on clay and was indeed a favourite this week in Båstad. Laaksonen will now face David Ferrer in the quarter-finals.

Ferrer played last match on center court and faced Dustin Brown. With a 4-0 advantage between them before the match Brown was the underdog but the Spaniard proved to strong and made it in straight sets 62 63.

The Ymer brothers made it in the doubles when they won their first doubles match against Podlipnik-Castillo/Vasilevski 64 63.

Elias Ymer fought untill the end against Fernando Verdasco

It was close for Elias Ymer, but Fernando Verdasco came out on top

The first encounter Fernando Verdasco hade with the "Ymer brother" was last year in Stockholm Open where younger brother Mikael Ymer defeated the Spaniard in the first round.

Many Swedes hoped today that bigger brother Elias could copy his brothers scalp and the crowd almost got what they where hoping for. Elias Ymer was the one who directed the first set and Verdasco stood helpless when Ymer fired a steaming cross court forehand to win the first set 64. But Verdasco found momentum and Ymer did not manage to keep his first serve percentage high enough which invited the 39 ranked Verdasco back in the game and claimed second set 63.

The final set came to be a real drama where Ymer save match points and had two chancdes to break at 45 but Verdasco managed to steer clear and finish it all 46 63 64.

Kick off & SEB kids day

Paire, first french winner since 1981

First time winner Benoit Paire overcame the tough wind and two time champ Tommy Robredo

Benoit Paire stood up against the tough windy conditions on the center court and against two time winner Tommy Robredo.

The 26-year old Frenchman dismissed the spanish veteran who calls Båstad his "second home" in two straight sets. The first set went in to tiebreak and Benoit showed great courage and admirable touch when he finished it of with drop shot, well out of Robredo’s reach.

From there the match was an uphill struggle for the 33-year old Spaniard who did not find a way to master the Frenchman. The second act was a far more confortable journey for Benoit ending it 63.
